So I don’t, in fact, hate television.
How can I hate the medium that brought me Game of Thrones, Neil Patrick Harris, Spongebob, Tony Soprano and Bryon Cranston? I simply cannot. BUT!
This thing on the 11 o’clock news reminded me of the asinine evil that tv production is. It was a feature on an African Canadian documentary filmmaker turned artist with a scholarly bend. That’s the story right there! But in the hands of hack producers, it morphed into a condescending , vapid and ultimately semi-deliberately humiliating puff piece on “Look! Even if you do everything right, you’ll still come up short”
Which is NOT the point of writing these kinds of pieces. Without having watched a single one of her documentaries, how can this “journalist” truly know what this woman is all about? How many interviewers have asked her the same questions about racism in the film industry and dismissed her effort to dispel these prejudices through her work?
I realized that it’s not just vapidity or even laziness. It’s a a sort of built-in bend towards condescension and humiliation of women and people of colour. I think the worst part is that most of it comes from other women and other people of colour. These same people write so stylishly that their own brand of neo-misogyny – or maybe it’s just smugness? – seems to float over people’s heads. Or they just refuse to acknowledge it.
End of rant.
