OH MY GOODNESS! I’ve found a favourite!!!! I promised myself that I was going to stretch out this book but I ended up devouring it in seven-ish hours (A relatively short read, 396 pages). It fills you with the burning need to find out what happens in the end, but at the same time, you don’t want it to.
I’ve wanted to read this book for the longest time and finally got around to it. I can’t adequately express just how excited I am to be writing this review. Let me explain why this book is the best thing I’ve read in a while.
The title is a mouthful, but the story itself is easier to digest. Beginning with the moment Allan Karlsson decides to take his old bones away from the old folk’s home in which he resides, this book takes you on an adventure of massive proportions, both in the present and in the past.
As the book progresses, Jonas Jonasson takes us in two different directions. Firstly, there is the present-day Allan, creating new adventures as a result of his escape attempt- one that involves criminals, theft and the introduction of brilliant new characters. Secondly, and more importantly, are the adventures of past-Allan. He just so happens to have been a part of many key historical events in the twentieth century. These events span from the rise of Franco in Spain to the building of the atomic bomb in the Cold War. Allan tells his story with such a dry, matter-of-fact sense of humour that even when he is embroiled in some of the darkest historical events, it’s funny.
I really did not want it to end. There are so many stories in this book it almost feels like a collection of short stories. Some people might have found the jumps jarring and strange, but I thought it was part of the book’s, and Allan’s, charm. The characters that Allan comes across (some fictional and some not) are beautifully written. I mean it was incredible. Allan is a such a fascinating character who’s unaffected by lust or politics, brutally honest and rightly so. I laughed and laughed and people on the subway must’ve thought I was a total nutter!
This book was a delight and I did not feel the need to rush through it. I savoured every single page of this incredible story. It was honestly so much fun and action-packed and so incredibly adorable.
FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC and I recommend it to everyone!
