I didn’t enjoy Fellside as much as I enjoyed the Girl with all the Gifts, largely because my expectations got in the way.
A couple hundred pages in and I was painfully reminded of Orange is the New Black, which, I hate, hate, hate LOATHE ENTIRELY. Before Alex came back into the fold, I very nearly called it quits. I felt like Pat Solitano from Silver Linings Playbook and got violent images of books being flung through a window.
Don’t get me wrong here! Fellside is not a bad book! Carey proves he’s a chameleon with the ability to juggle a multitude of genres expertly however, it felt like the book didn’t know what it wanted to be. Is it horror (nope), is it a prison drama (meh), is it about addiction (sometimes), is it trying to fit into everything without ever really settling on what it should be ??!! YES!
Honestly, the absolute worst part was the whole dreamscape bullshit. I couldn’t get behind it and it was just so boring! By the end I was more keen to just finish than actually find out what happens which sums up my thoughts quite a bit, don’t you think? There were good bits here and there but not in the majority, a shame really.
If you’ve read the Girl with all the Gifts, get into Fellside with an open mind. I know, easier said than don but trust me, you’ll enjoy the book a lot more!
