I should note here that I am currently writing this review at 1AM and I’m on such a high I don’t give a shit. There’s probably going to be some major spoilers in here for those of you that haven’t read ACOWAR.
Here’s to nonsense! Let’s get it!
For starters, I think it’s important to note the controversy surrounding Maas’ (If you’re going to bitch at me for this, go ahead). I am a women of colour and am entitled to my own god-damn opinion.
Maas is a symbol of white feminism. Plain and simple. She speaks openly about girl power, but it’s a certain type of empowerment in all of her stories. Her narrow-mindedness is not overlooked by an audience that is empowered to be more vocal about the colour of their skin and about their sexuality. We that don’t mind calling out authors or celebrities, and won’t settle for a story that doesn’t keep up with the times. Everyone has to do better – authors and their audiences.
Yes, it’s just a fictional book, but Maas is clearly making a statement about strong women and it’s important to point out that it still shuts out women and people of colour.
and DESPITE all of this, I still loved the book to bits, flaws and all.
Anyway, Feyre Archeron is probably one of my favourite heroines. Funny, because she used to annoy the crap out of me. But the Feyre that took down Tamlin’s entire Court right underneath his nose and used him and Lucien to do it? Feyre messing with Ianthe in Spring Court and setting her up? YES PUHLEESSSSEE!!!
And Suriel… RIP the realest G
Lord and Lady Night.
I love that. Feyre was referred to as High Lady, both by herself and others, about a million times during the course of the novel and I have to say that I did not get tired of it for even a second. She’s High Lady. I’ll never stop loving that, ever.
That whole meeting with the High Lords was incredibly done, even if I wanted to rip out Tamlin’s throat the majority of the time. When Rhys forced him to stop talking? Beautiful. When Feyre handed Beron his ass with her powers? Magnificent. Nesta taking charge? Astounding. Just that entire meeting was a resounding hell yes from me.
Can I mention Velaris, tho? I swear they’re just the people from Roller Coaster Tycoon. We never hear or see them, but they are there, supposedly. I like to imagine they just walk around aimlessly like in the game.
And….and…wait a minute! I thought mates were suppose to be some rare thing, but literally everyone in ACOWAR has a mate. You get a mate, and you get a mate, and you get a mate. Everybody gets a mattteeeee!
